It has been said that the most basic of human needs are food, clothing and shelter. This conventional thinking has been taught for a number of years in various institutions of higher learning through theories such as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. However, contemporary thinking has cast serious doubt on this theory. Recent evidence suggests that a new model may be more accurate, as illustrated below:

Similar to conventional theories, we have discovered that the most basic of needs are not enough in order to enjoy a full and happy existence. We need more. That "more", or the next level of need, has to be the rudiments. To be sure, the 40 modern drum rudiments are a worthy goal. But at this level of need, we are talking about the 26 Standard American Drum Rudiments. That's right, the very ones you need to know for solo and ensemble contest.
